A new Bitcoin Request for Comments, BRC-169 — Universal Handle Addressing and Resolution for the Metanet, has been published within the BSV Blockchain BRC framework.
The proposal addresses a foundational problem for a peer-to-peer application environment: how users and software can identify and locate one another through a common addressing convention without exposing the underlying cryptographic identifiers that applications use internally.
BSV Association highlighted BRC-169 on August 14 as part of the longer-term development of the Metanet concept—a peer-to-peer digital environment intended to support interactions between people as well as machines.
Human-readable addressing has long been recognized as an important usability layer for blockchain applications. Public keys, transaction identifiers and other cryptographic references are useful to software but poorly suited to everyday human interaction. A user should ideally be able to refer to another person, organization, service or application through a recognizable handle while compatible software performs the required cryptographic resolution beneath the interface.
That direction is consistent with earlier BRC thinking. BRC-49, Users should never see an address, argues that raw blockchain addresses should ultimately disappear from ordinary user experience, with applications and wallets handling the technical addressing layer themselves.
BRC-169 moves that principle toward a broader Metanet addressing model by defining a common framework around universal handles and their resolution.
The distinction between a handle and the underlying identity is important. A handle can provide the memorable reference that humans or applications use, while the resolution process can connect that reference to the cryptographic information required for authentication, communication, payments or another peer-to-peer interaction.
A standardized resolution layer could become useful across multiple application categories. A wallet may need to identify a payment counterparty, a messaging application may need to locate another participant, a browser may need to resolve an application or service, while autonomous software may need a consistent way to address another machine or agent.
Without shared conventions, each application can create its own naming and directory system. That recreates fragmentation: the same person or service may have unrelated identifiers in different applications, while developers must build separate lookup systems for each environment.
A universal addressing convention instead creates the possibility that the handle remains usable across independently developed software, provided those applications implement the same resolution standard.
That fits the wider purpose of the BRC repository. Bitcoin Requests for Comments cover shared interfaces, payment protocols, identity, key derivation, messaging, overlays and other conventions intended to let independently built applications interoperate rather than requiring each application to recreate the underlying infrastructure.
BRC-169 should presently be understood as a technical proposal, not evidence that every BSV Blockchain wallet or application has implemented universal handles. The BRC process is designed to allow proposals to be published, discussed and improved, and practical significance will depend on implementation across wallets, browsers, identity systems and other applications.
The proposal also sits alongside existing work aimed at keeping raw infrastructure away from the user interface. BRC-100 provides a common wallet-to-application interface, while peer-to-peer authentication and identity-certificate standards define ways for software to establish identities and exchange authenticated information. Universal handle resolution could provide a more approachable addressing layer above those cryptographic mechanisms.
The longer-term question is therefore not simply whether BSV Blockchain can support human-readable names. It is whether independently built applications can resolve the same identifiers consistently without recreating a centralized application directory as the unavoidable intermediary.

Addressing is easy to overlook because mature infrastructure tends to make it disappear. Internet users type domain names rather than IP addresses, and phone users choose names rather than entering network identifiers. A similar abstraction will be necessary if BSV Blockchain applications are expected to interact naturally across wallets, browsers, messaging, payments and machine-to-machine services. BRC-169 is therefore interesting less as an isolated naming feature than as another attempt to turn a collection of applications into interoperable infrastructure: recognizable identifiers at the surface, cryptographic resolution underneath, and common conventions connecting independently built systems.
