Doug Liman’s upcoming feature film Bitcoin, formerly known as Killing Satoshi, has already attracted attention for its unusual production method. A new interview with producer Ryan Kavanaugh now provides a much clearer look at the economics behind that experiment.

Speaking with Joey Daoud of VP Land for Inside the AI Studio, Kavanaugh detailed how the $70 million production used a single gray-stage environment, human performers, conventional filmmaking departments, and a large AI post-production team to attempt a film whose physical-production requirements would normally have been far more extensive.

The numbers help explain why Bitcoin has become more than a story about artificial intelligence in filmmaking. It is also becoming a test of whether a different production structure can significantly change the economics of making large-scale films.

From a $150 Million Budget to a $70 Million Production

According to Kavanaugh, an early conventional budget for Bitcoin came back at approximately $150 million. The finished production budget was instead around $70 million.

The distinction becomes clearer when the costs are separated into Hollywood’s traditional “above-the-line” and “below-the-line” categories. Above-the-line costs generally include principal actors, the director, producers, and other key creative talent. Below-the-line costs cover much of the physical machinery of production: crews, locations, sets, lighting, transportation, equipment, and the logistical work required to move a film from place to place.

Kavanaugh said the conventional below-the-line requirement was estimated at roughly $120 million to $130 million. The AI-assisted production initially reduced that component to around $40 million, with approximately $15 million of that associated with research, development, and building the new production system itself.

His more striking claim is what could happen if the same film were started again today. With the underlying workflow already developed, Kavanaugh estimates that the below-the-line portion could now fall to approximately $20 million to $25 million, while actors, the director, and other principal creative participants would continue to receive conventional compensation.

That distinction is important. The model being described is not simply about making the same movie with fewer people. It is about removing some of the time, travel, construction, and repeated physical setup that normally surround those people.

213 Locations, 18 Countries, One Stage

The scale of the logistical difference is perhaps the clearest part of the interview.

The conventional production plan reportedly called for 213 locations across 18 countries and approximately 72 shooting days. Instead, the production was filmed on a single gray stage in London over roughly 21 days, with the lead performers completing their work in about 19 days.

Rather than transporting cast and crew among hundreds of physical environments, those environments are being created around the filmed performances during post-production.

The gray-stage approach differs from a conventional green-screen production in that the neutral stage, lighting, camera information, and captured performances become inputs for a larger AI-assisted visual pipeline. The physical performance remains the foundation, while locations, environments, and other visual elements are constructed afterward.

Kavanaugh also described dramatically shorter setup times. Changes that might traditionally require lengthy relighting, rebuilding, or moving an entire production unit could reportedly be completed on the gray stage in minutes.

“The Savings Isn’t in People”

One of the most useful points in the interview is Kavanaugh’s argument that the economic advantage should not be understood simply as replacing filmmakers with software.

His summary is straightforward: “The savings isn’t in people, it’s in time.”

Kavanaugh said actors, the director, and department heads were paid their normal rates. The production also used more than 130 day players, while Acme AI & FX now employs around 100 AI artists involved in the new workflow.

That suggests a different possible direction for AI-assisted filmmaking from the simplest assumption that smaller budgets must mean dramatically smaller creative teams.

The production instead compresses the calendar and changes where the work occurs. Fewer days may be spent traveling, constructing physical locations, resetting stages, or waiting for complex setups, while more work moves into digital environment creation and post-production.

Whether that model ultimately produces theatrical-quality results is something audiences will be able to judge only when the film is shown publicly.

A Production System Beyond Bitcoin

The experiment is also beginning to extend beyond this one film.

According to Daoud’s summary of the interview, development of the system behind Bitcoin has produced around 60 patents, while several other hybrid productions are already moving through the same broader pipeline.

That makes Bitcoin particularly interesting from an industry perspective. Its significance may eventually depend on more than whether the film itself succeeds commercially. It is also functioning as the first large demonstration of a production model its creators intend to reuse.

Earlier reporting had already established the unusual scale of the project: a $70 million feature starring Casey Affleck, Pete Davidson, Gal Gadot, and Isla Fisher, filmed largely inside a custom gray-screen facility while AI-assisted processes construct much of the world surrounding the performances.

The new producer interview fills in something those earlier reports could only partially show: where the claimed economic advantage actually comes from.

The most interesting part of this update is not simply that Bitcoin uses AI.

It is that the production is beginning to reveal a coherent economic model behind that use.

A story requiring hundreds of locations across numerous countries creates enormous logistical costs before an audience sees a single frame. If filmmakers can preserve human performances while turning much of that physical geography into a digital production problem, the economics of certain kinds of films could change substantially.

Bitcoin is therefore becoming an unusual experiment on two levels. Its story brings the long-running Satoshi identity dispute into a major feature-film format, while its production is simultaneously testing whether a different technological infrastructure can change how such films are made.

The result still has to prove itself on screen.
